Ingredients
Scale
- 1½ pounds lean ground beef
- 1 teaspoon kosher fine salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1½ cups broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons filtered water, for slurry
- black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Shape into 4 oval patties with a shallow indent in the center.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side. Remove and let rest.
- In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil and arrange the sliced mushrooms in a single layer.
- Cook the mushrooms undisturbed for 4-5 minutes until browned, then stir and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Add the sweet onion and cook until soft.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Pour in the broth, soy sauce, and oyster sauce, and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Prepare the slurry by mixing the cornstarch with filtered water until smooth.
- Slowly add the slurry to the simmering gravy while stirring until thickened. It should coat the back of a spoon easily.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the gravy over them. Simmer for 3-4 minutes to combine the flavors. Season with black pepper before serving.
Notes
For added flavor, marinate the beef overnight if time permits.
Serve with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
